GTP for Estimation of Total Suspended Solids in Water Samples

  • To lay down the procedure for determining the total suspended solids in water samples.
  • A well-mixed sample is filtered through a weighed standard Whatman filter and the residue retained on the filter is dried to a constant weight at 103 to 105ºC. The increase in the weight of the filter paper represents the Total Suspended Solids

100 ml measuring cylinder

  • Sample 100 ml of water in a clean previously dried conical flask.
  • Take a piece of Whatman filter paper and keep it on drying at 100ºC for 15 to 20 min
  • Take the initial weight of Whatman filter paper that is (A)
  • Filter the sample through the Whatman filter paper.
  • Keep it for drying the filter paper at 100ºC for 1 hr in an Oven.
  • Cool the paper in the desiccator to balance the temperature.
  • Weigh the filter paper immediately after drying. (B)

Weight of the paper. - A
Weight of the paper + sample after drying - B
