SOP for Operation and Calibration of Conductivity Meter

OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for Operation and Calibration of the Conductivity Meter for better and error free use.

SCOPE
This procedure is applicable for Conductivity Meter, installed in Quality Control department at XYZ Limited

RESPONSIBILITY
Chemist and above - QC department.
Checking: Asst. Manager and above - QC department.

PROCEDURE
Operational Procedure
Switch on the mains.
  • Switch on the ‘POWER’.
  • The display shows ‘count in μs/cm ’.
  • Rinse with distilled water and dry it with tissue paper.
  • Ensure that before use the conductivity meter, it should be calibrated.
  • Immerse both probes in the solution to be measured.
  • After a while the unit will display the temperature and conductivity of the solution in microsiemens/millisiemens units.
  • On completion remove the conductivity cell and temperature probe from the test solution.
  • Rinse conductivity cell and temperature probe with distilled water and dry it with tissue paper.
  • Keep the cell immersed in distilled water in between and after the measurement.
  • Switch “OFF” the mains.

Calibration Procedure
Frequency: Daily
  • Rinse conductivity cell and temperature probe with distilled water and dry it with tissue paper.
  • Dip the conductivity cell in 0.001 M Std. KCl solution
  • Check the standard conductivity switch is in upward position so that the full range of display is read.
  • Record the observation in Annexure-1 and if necessary turn the ‘standardize’ shaft with a screwdriver to get correct conductance of the solution.
