SOP for Cleaning of Glassware used in Chemical & Instrumental Analysis

OBJECTIVE:
To lay down the procedure for Cleaning of Glassware used in quality control Laboratory.

SCOPE:
This SOP shall be applicable to clean the glassware in Quality Control Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITY:
Execution : Lab Attendant - QC department 
Checking : Chemist and above – QC department. 

PROCEDURE:
  • Wear goggles and hand gloves before cleaning of glassware 
  • Drain out the left-over solutions of the glassware into the sink in washing area 
  • Clean the glassware such as flasks, beakers, pipettes, burettes, bottles, etc. in the following manner: 
  • First wash the used glassware properly with tap water 
  • Then scrub/Rinse the glassware with liquid soap solution 
  • Rinse the glassware properly with tap water 
  • Again rinse 3 to 4 times with Purified water. 
  • Drain the water from glassware. 
  • Ensure the cleanliness by visual checking and if it is not clean then clean by using dilute HCl and nitric acid 
  • Keep cleaned glassware in oven at about 50°C, use dried glassware for analysis. 
  • Cleaning of glassware with dilute HCl/Dilute nitric acid (Where ever necessary) 
  • Rinse the glassware with dilute hydrochloric acid/nitric acid or if required allow it to stand overnight 
  • Rinse with plenty of tap water 
  • Again rinse 3 to 4 times with Purified water. 
  • Ensure the cleanliness by visual checking and if it is not clean then discard the glassware.
